I didn’t have testers for my first submission and it showed – the hack definitely improved once I got some outside feedback on it. If something feels weird to you when testing, fix it or remove it. Nothing was so long that it was unbearable, and nothing was too short without any challenge. Level lengths: Each level and section were incredibly reasonable lengths. It flowed really nicely, the jumps were fun, and it just was a blast to play an old-school inspired Ultra Star. Level 5: This level is fucking sick, no complaints with this at all. RNG Sprites: I recommend using other sprites besides ones that use RNG, namely the podaboos and the bone fish in level 7. Having free vertical movement (or whatever it’s called) with the camera is often the culprit – not every level has to be multiple screens high. Similar to my thoughts on muncher placement, this level felt intentionally frustrating for the player.Ĭamera: There were a couple instances (particularly in level 6 and 7) where the camera did not allow for the player to see obstacles in a fair way. There’s no indication of when to use the fast swimming mechanic (which felt awkward to use in its own right), and there was no reason to have a third section. Water level: This level needs some serious TLC. There’s nothing wrong with tightness, but I encourage you to find creative ways to do so without munchers or spikes. Often, it felt like munchers and spikes made for a tight jump or swim for no reason, and felt like their primary reason for placement was to annoy the player (the water level was an especially egregious offender). Munchers/spikes: These absolutely must be loosened up. If the level was mainly focused on shells, this wouldn’t have been that big of an issue.ĭifficulty: Based on what is mentioned above, I feel like the difficulty of the hack came from awkwardly placed obstacles rather than actually difficult sections or tricks. For example, the second half of level 7 randomly turns into shell tech out of nowhere, which caught me off-guard. As a result, many jumps felt awkward to make – I truly feel like making jumps longer wouldn’t have ruined the levels at all and would have made jumps more satisfying and fun to pull off.įlow: Levels also generally didn’t feel like they had too much of a flow rather, they felt more like a bunch of obstacles put together instead of having a cohesive and smooth run-through. Jumps: It felt like a majority of jumps had to be cut short, for one reason or another. Second section: Removed duck cheese kaizos Second section: Removed first thwomp, moved secret Second section: Moved last urchin up one tile Ship section: More lenient with moving room Ship section: Mostly redone to make shorter Added spikes after shell jump for clarity change out spritekiller sprite for consistency Added sprite killer for final falling shell I had a great time making it and hopefully others enjoy it. There are no secret exits, but there is one hidden portrait room in each level. My aim was for lower end of intermediate, and hopefully that is where it eventually landed! It's 7 straightforward, mostly old school inspired levels and 95% vanilla outside of quality of life patches, custom music, and fast swim ASM due to personal preference. Hello! I made Jouhou (pronounced Joe Who) in my spare time over the span of a month to learn Lunar Magic and try to share something with a community that has brought me lots of enjoyment.
